GLENVIEW, IL — The Environment & Natural Resources Commission recently announced the winners of its Environmental Sustainability Awards for the seventh consecutive year. This recognition took place during a Glenview Village Board meeting, with Chris Newman and Scott Daniels presenting the awards.
Village President Mike Jenny expressed his appreciation for the community’s efforts, stating, “It’s always fantastic to see so much great work being done for sustainability in our community.” Nominations were open for projects completed between January 1 and December 1, 2024, for various organizations, including businesses, schools, houses of worship, and volunteer groups within Glenview.
Innovation – Glenview Public Library
The Glenview Public Library has transformed its rooftop terrace into a vibrant native habitat. By selecting native plants that attract key pollinators like hummingbirds and butterflies, the library has created an essential ecosystem. They also added features such as a water source for birds, bee hotels for shelter, and a diverse array of native flora. Comfortable furniture funded by the Friends of Glenview Public Library invites visitors to relax and enjoy this peaceful outdoor space.
Innovation – Glenview Park District and Greener Glenview
In August 2024, the Glenview Park District and Greener Glenview hosted the second annual SportSwap event. This initiative allowed residents to exchange gently used sports equipment for vouchers. These vouchers, combined with cash, could be used to buy reusable items at great prices. Unsold items were donated to Goodwill, and the event raised $1,034 for the Glenview Park Foundation’s Youth Leisureship Program. SportSwap helped keep countless items out of landfills and encouraged a new perspective on the value of second-hand goods.
Leadership – Attea Middle School and Greener Glenview
A student from Attea Middle School took an impressive step towards sustainability by consulting with Greener Glenview’s Native Habitat Project. She suggested creating a Pollinator Garden on school grounds to support declining insect and bird populations. Working with the school’s Environmental Club and Hope Club, they successfully installed native plants, earning certification from the National Wildlife Federation. This garden now contributes to the network of native habitats throughout Glenview, offering a sanctuary for a variety of pollinators.
