Scientists have made an exciting discovery: evidence of a giant squid has been found in the waters off western Australia for the first time in over 25 years. During deep-sea research near the Ningaloo coast, researchers used environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques to analyze samples from the ocean’s depths.
The team collected 178 water samples, exploring five different depths in the eastern Indian Ocean. They identified 226 marine species from 126 families. Among these was genetic material linked to the elusive giant squid, a creature that has fascinated people for ages. Dr. Georgia Nester, the study’s lead author, noted, “Finding evidence of a giant squid really captures people’s imagination, but it’s just one part of a much bigger picture.”
Along with the giant squid, the research revealed 83 new species records or extensions for the area. This includes the sleeper shark and the faceless cusk eel, which were identified in western Australian waters for the first time.
Giant squids can grow to impressive lengths, with the largest recorded specimen measuring about 43 feet. The first live sighting of a giant squid in its natural habitat occurred in 2012. Before that, most finds were deceased or dying.
