Virgin Australia has changed its baggage rules starting today for economy class travelers. Previously, passengers could bring up to 7kg of luggage split across two bags. Now, you can bring one carry-on bag weighing up to 8kg.
You can still take a small personal item, like a handbag or a laptop bag, but there are size limits. The personal item must fit under the seat in front of you. Virgin specifies that it can’t be larger than 45cm long, 33cm wide, and 20cm high.
Chris Snook, Virgin’s Chief Operations Officer, believes this change will create a better overall experience. He mentioned that customer feedback played a key role in shaping these new rules. The goal is to make the boarding process easier and more consistent for everyone.
It’s important to note that Velocity Red or Silver members flying in economy will also be affected by this update. Business class passengers can carry up to 14kg in two bags, but they still can’t exceed 8kg per bag.
For comparison, Qantas allows 10kg in carry-on luggage for domestic travelers, which increases to 14kg for two bags. Jetstar has more stringent rules, allowing only 7kg for starter fares.
