ESTES PARK, Colo. – A recent survey by Careerminds reveals that Estes Park is the top spot in Colorado for “micro-retirement.” It ranks #28 in the nation for this growing trend, where people take extended breaks from work to relax and recharge.
Micro-retirement isn’t about leaving a job forever. It’s about taking several months off to reconnect with life and nature. Remote, peaceful places like those in Northern Colorado are perfect for this. Estes Park shines with its beautiful mountains, laid-back charm, and proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park. Survey participants highlighted the calm Riverwalk and tranquil hikes at Bear Lake as ideal spots for unwinding.
Other Colorado towns also made the nationwide list:
- Manitou Springs (#41) – Famous for its healing mineral springs and artistic vibe.
- Telluride (#53) – A cultural gem surrounded by stunning mountain scenery.
- Pagosa Springs (#60) – Known for the world’s deepest geothermal hot springs.
- Crestone (#71) – A spiritually enriching town at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
- Carbondale (#88) – A creative hub near the picturesque Mount Sopris.
The survey involved 3,007 American workers and uncovered that nearly 25% would take 4–6 months off if given the chance, while another 24% would consider a break of a year or more. The biggest motivators for wanting a micro-retirement included travel (26%), health (23%), and simply resting (21%). Yet, half of the respondents pointed to financial issues as the main hurdle to taking a break.
While Hilo, Hawaii, tops the national list for micro-retirement havens, Colorado’s mix of natural beauty and relaxed communities continues to draw people seeking a slower-paced life, especially after episodes of burnout or career changes.
