The 6th National Chilika Bird Festival kicked off today at Lok Seva Bhawan in Bhubaneswar. This event is a collaboration between the Departments of Tourism and Forest, Environment, and Climate Change of Odisha.
Deputy Chief Minister Smt. Pravati Parida, the Chief Guest, shared insights on the significance of migratory birds. Their arrival each year indicates a healthy ecosystem in Odisha. She stressed the need for conservation and careful monitoring of these bird populations to protect Chilika’s diverse wildlife.
Minister for Forest, Environment, and Climate Change, Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia, was also present. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to environmental conservation. He emphasized how Chilika Lake serves as both an ecological gem and a source of income for local communities. This festival plays a crucial role in raising awareness and enhancing the lake’s reputation.
Experts at the festival included Principal Secretary Bhaskar Jyoti Sharma and Chief Wildlife Warden Prakash Kumar Jha, among others, all highlighting the importance of protecting Chilika’s natural treasures.
During the event, Balwant Singh, Commissioner of the Tourism Department, shared exciting plans to promote eco-tourism in the Chilika area. Suresh Pant, a leading forestry expert, pointed out that Chilika is vital for Odisha’s wildlife and local livelihoods.
Several publications were launched, such as a pocket guide about 150 million birds and a booklet focused on bird conservation in Odisha.
A significant partnership was formed with an MoU between the Odisha State Wildlife Organization and the Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management. This agreement aims to promote eco-tourism products across the state.
The festival reflects a growing trend where communities are increasingly involved in tourism that respects and preserves natural resources. As communities seek to benefit from eco-tourism, studies show that eco-tourism can generate job opportunities, boost local economies, and encourage wildlife conservation. In fact, eco-tourism destinations have seen a rise in visitors: a recent report noted that such areas grew by 12% last year.
The National Chilika Bird Festival not only celebrates the remarkable biodiversity of Odisha but also underscores the importance of sustainable practices in tourism.
