Meet Linda Sankey – NDP Candidate for Similkameen-South Okanagan-West Kootenay
About Linda:
With over 20 years of experience, I’m passionate about advocating for workers and supporting those in need. I began as a union shop steward and eventually became the Executive Director at SOSBIS. I’ve managed large housing projects, secured critical funding, and supported over 200 low-income residents, including families and seniors.
Beyond housing, I’ve been involved in local policy through initiatives like the Penticton Housing Task Force, co-chairing the 100 More Homes Collaborative. My volunteer work spans two decades, focusing on youth and community groups. I genuinely care about our community and want to ensure it thrives.
Questions and Answers:
1. Your riding includes both urban and rural areas. How will you represent the diverse needs of residents?
I’ve been active in this riding for most of my life. Throughout this campaign, I’ve traveled across our region multiple times, meeting with local governments, businesses, and community groups. I plan to establish 2-3 regional offices where residents can easily reach out and get direct help. It’s vital to maintain a strong connection and build relationships across different sectors.
2. How would you support Okanagan farmers affected by the trade war?
I’ve spoken to many farmers concerned about the trade war’s impact. Collaborating with all levels of government and the farming community is crucial. We need to discuss solutions such as enhancing crop resilience, exploring new markets, and providing financial support to keep farmers competitive. Other sectors, like tourism and forestry, are also affected, and I’ll advocate for them too.
3. What’s your plan to improve healthcare access, particularly in rural areas?
Emergency room closures and long wait times are major concerns. We must fast-track the credentials of internationally trained healthcare workers and offer more training opportunities here. Attracting U.S.-trained professionals with incentives can help too. Doctors should have the support they need to prioritize patient care over administrative tasks. Innovation, not privatization, is key to solving these issues.
4. What do you see as the most pressing issue in your riding?
Affordability, especially in housing, is a top concern for many. I want my grandchildren—and yours—to be able to afford a home. Our housing strategy needs to cover a range of options, from affordable ownership to co-op housing for families and seniors. Increased funding from CMHC is necessary to address diverse housing needs and reduce homelessness effectively.
5. If your party is not in government, how will you still advocate for your constituents?
This riding has a strong tradition of NDP representation, thanks to leaders like Alex Atamanenko and Richard Cannings. Even with a smaller number of MPs, the NDP has achieved significant gains like a national Pharmacare program and worker protections. I believe that together, we can continue this legacy and ensure our voices are heard in Parliament.
As we approach the election, it’s essential for every voter to understand the candidates and their plans. Looking at local issues through the lens of experience and community involvement can make a real difference in representing the needs of our diverse population.
