On a quiet winter weekend in New York, DreamWorks Animation’s “Dog Man” held on to the top spot at the box office for the second week. This animated film, based on Dav Pilkey’s beloved graphic novels, earned $13.7 million in ticket sales, according to estimates released on Sunday.
New releases like “Love Hurts,” starring Ke Huy Quan, and the Valentine-themed slasher, “Heart Eyes,” tried to catch up but fell short. Hollywood typically shifts its focus from major releases during Super Bowl weekend, opting to promote movies with trailers aimed at the large TV audience instead.
Though it led the weekend, “Dog Man” saw a significant drop in ticket sales, down 62% from its opening weekend. So far, it has brought in $54.1 million domestically against a production budget of $40 million.
Following “Dog Man,” Spyglass Media Group’s “Heart Eyes” came in second, earning $8.5 million from over 3,100 theaters. This film blends horror and romance and has received mixed reviews. Despite audiences giving it a “B-” CinemaScore, critics were generally more positive.
In third place, “Love Hurts” opened with just $5.8 million in 3,055 theaters. In this action-comedy, Ke Huy Quan plays a mild-mannered realtor with a shady past, alongside Ariana DeBose. Unfortunately, the film received a “C+” CinemaScore from viewers, showing that it did not resonate well with audiences.
Next weekend promises to be more exciting for Hollywood with major releases like Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Paddington in Peru” hitting theaters.
