The Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2025 is happening in New Delhi starting this Thursday. This event will showcase India’s rising role in the global rice market and will introduce the country’s first Artificial Intelligence-based rice sorting system.

The conference is organized by the Indian Rice Exporters’ Federation (IREF) with support from the Indian government. It will host delegates from over 80 countries, including key figures in rice importing and exporting. The goal is to unite farmers, exporters, and innovators to enhance the economy while also focusing on sustainability.

Prem Garg, the National President of IREF, emphasized that the aim is to not only make Indian rice the most traded but also the most trusted globally. A significant part of the event will include recognizing the hard work of 17 Indian farmers who have excelled in quality and innovation in rice farming. These farmers come from various states like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Kerala, and cultivate unique rice varieties from Govindobhog to Chak-Hao, or aromatic black rice.

BIRC 2025 serves as a testament to the growing global acceptance of Indian farmers and their tech advancements. The new AI-powered system can analyze rice grains for color, size, shape, and structure, making the sorting process more efficient. This leap in technology enhances India’s agri-processing capabilities and reduces costs.

The event will showcase rice varieties from all Indian states, celebrating the country’s agricultural diversity. There’s also a special pavilion for Women Entrepreneurs, Startups, and MSMEs, highlighting innovations in agriculture—ranging from seed development to digital trade and blockchain traceability. This initiative aims to empower women-led enterprises through mentorship and export opportunities.

IREF is optimistic about generating about Rs 1.8 lakh crore in global rice trade during the conference, with anticipated export agreements of around Rs 25,000 crore. This could help Indian farmers secure better prices for their rice, reducing reliance on government subsidies.

Historically, India has been a major player in the global rice market. In 2021, India exported over 16 million tons of rice, contributing significantly to the global supply. With events like BIRC 2025, India continues to push forward, enhancing its reputation on the international stage.
