Syracuse University is hosting a TEDx event on April 9, 2025, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Tan Auditorium in the National Veterans Resource Center. This free event is open to students, faculty, alumni, and community members. With the theme "Changing the Narrative," it aims to inspire attendees to think differently about common stories that shape our world.
The event features a lineup of speakers who will share their unique journeys and innovative ideas. They will encourage everyone to reflect on their own stories and explore how they can contribute to positive change. The goal is to create a space where diverse voices can be heard.
Ryan Nkongnyu, a communications major and a dedicated student leader, is the event coordinator. He believes that the narratives we encounter in media influence how we see society. "Changing the Narrative is about using our voices and platforms to educate and inspire others," he says. This highlights the important role each person plays in driving change, especially in today’s fast-paced media environment.
The event will also feature several engaging speakers:
- Sonia Issa will discuss “Breaking Cycles, Not Ourselves.”
- Alie Sarvane will present “Redefine Your Life.”
- Melissa Martinez, a faculty member from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, will talk about “Be A Creator.”
- Jordan Pierre will address “The Danger of A Single Narrative Story.”
- Clare Frattarola will share insights on “How Teaching Kids Emotional Intelligence Can Change the World.”
According to a recent study by PR Newswire, over 70% of people say they value diverse perspectives but often feel unheard. Events like TEDx at Syracuse University provide an opportunity for individuals to share their stories and drive discussions that matter.
The event is co-sponsored by Syracuse University Libraries and the Office of Strategic Initiatives and Innovation. David Seaman, the dean of Syracuse University Libraries, expressed hope that the event will foster engaging conversations that extend beyond the main event.
