Drake University Athletics Welcomes Top Slovak Recruit Sam Melaga to Bulldogs’ Roster!

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Bulldogs have officially welcomed standout recruit Sam Melaga from Slovakia to their roster for the upcoming spring season.

“Sam really impressed us during the recruiting process. He has a great mix of athletic and academic strengths,” said Head Coach Justin Stuckey. “His skills will boost our competitiveness in both singles and doubles. We’re thrilled to have him join us this spring.”

Melaga has consistently maintained a UTR above 11.50 during his junior career, reaching a peak of 11.86 in singles this year. He’s a formidable player in Slovak tennis, having won national championships in both singles and doubles. Additionally, he clinched the J30 doubles title in Trnava and was a finalist at several J30 tournaments. His journey includes representing the Slovak national team multiple times and holding the title of Slovak No. 1 for four consecutive years.

When asked about his choice, Melaga stated, “I chose Drake because it’s a great university that balances academics and athletics. It will help me grow as both a player and a person.”

Sam’s addition could be a pivotal moment for the Bulldogs, especially as they aim to strengthen their team in an increasingly competitive landscape.
