COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Eastern Kentucky University men’s cross country team had a strong showing at the Gans Creek Classic Invitational, finishing in 17th place out of a competitive field. This result is significant, as it places EKU as the third-best team from the Southeast Region, only behind Virginia and Wake Forest.
The Colonels outperformed notable nationally ranked teams, including No. 25 Ole Miss and No. 28 Furman. They also edged out various regionally ranked squads from other regions.
Leading the charge was Taha Er Raouy, who made a strong debut with a personal best time of 23:07.3, finishing 31st overall. He showed remarkable tenacity by advancing nine positions in the final two kilometers. Brian Kimutai, also making his first collegiate appearance, closely followed in 33rd place with a time of 23:08.05.
Another standout was Mario Priego Montero. He showcased impressive speed, moving up ten spots in the last kilometer to finish 95th. Tomas Vega and James Ndayishimiye contributed to the scoring team, crossing the line in 170th and 174th place, respectively.
Their performance illustrates a growing competitiveness in the program. As coach of the team, it’s important to recognize the hard work and dedication these runners show, especially as many of them are still gaining experience.
Statistics from the race reveal that out of 48 freshmen, Kimutai ranked as the third-highest finisher, highlighting the promise within the team’s younger athletes.
EKU’s next challenge is set for October 4 at the Live in Lou Classic in Louisville, Kentucky, where they aim to build on this momentum.
This season, the focus is not just on results, but also on individual growth and team spirit. As runners push themselves, they embody the resilience needed for success in competitive sports.
