DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Two Middle Eastern countries, Egypt and Iran, are unhappy with FIFA over a World Cup match scheduled for Seattle. This game, set for June 26, aims to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride, drawing support from local organizers who wish to highlight diversity in the region.
Egypt’s soccer federation has publicly rejected the match, stating it contradicts their cultural values. They sent a letter to FIFA urging them to cancel any activities associated with LGBTQ+ support. In their message, they expressed concerns that such celebrations might offend the audience from both Egypt and Iran.
Iran’s reaction was similarly strong. Mehdi Taj, president of Iran’s Football Federation, criticized the timing of the match in a TV interview. He mentioned that both countries intend to raise this issue at an upcoming FIFA Council meeting in Qatar.
Seattle PrideFest, organized since 2007, plans various events surrounding the match, including a unique art contest. One contestant depicted a crab goalie holding a soccer ball while carrying coffee—symbolizing Seattle’s quirky spirit. Seattle’s Mayor-elect, Kate Wilson, expressed pride in the city’s commitment to inclusivity, stating on social media, “With matches on Juneteenth and Pride, we get to show the world that in Seattle, everyone is welcome.”
FIFA manages stadiums and fan zones for the World Cup but doesn’t control local community events. They haven’t commented on the situation or whether they might consider rescheduling another match in Seattle.
In Iran and Egypt, being LGBTQ+ can lead to severe consequences. In Iran, punishment can even include the death penalty. This reflects a broader context where both countries have laws and societal norms that harshly penalize LGBTQ+ individuals. In the past, Egyptian authorities have persecuted queer people under vague charges like “debauchery.”
The World Cup brings to light complicated issues related to cultural acceptance and human rights. FIFA is caught in a dilemma, having previously upheld cultural norms during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they defended the host nation’s stance against LGBTQ+ displays. This creates a tension between respecting cultural differences and promoting universal human rights.
