Elk Grove Village recently made headlines by donating over 20,280 nonperishable food items to the Elk Grove Township Food Pantry. This remarkable effort marks the largest donation in the pantry’s history.
To celebrate the village’s 70th anniversary, officials initially aimed to collect 1,956 items—one for each year since its founding in 1956. However, Mayor Craig Johnson decided to raise the goal to 19,560 items three weeks before the end of the drive. “That’s incredible,” he expressed during a village board meeting, thanking everyone for their contributions.
The pantry serves around 1,100 families each month. In 2025 alone, it helped around 12,700 families, benefiting approximately 40,000 individuals. Importantly, the pantry operates solely on private donations, with no public funding supporting its efforts.
This initiative reflects a broader trend in communities prioritizing local support. According to a recent survey, 78% of individuals stated they are more inclined to donate to local food banks, especially during challenging economic times.
