Direct Relief has sent 52,000 vials of insulin, along with over 2.1 million needles and syringes, to Ecuador. This initiative supports the Ministry of Public Health’s efforts to provide vital treatment for people living with diabetes.
The insulin was donated by Novo Nordisk, while embecta provided the needles and syringes. Direct Relief worked closely with Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil, a nonprofit health provider, to deliver these supplies. Upon arrival in Quito, health authorities integrated the supplies into the national health system for distribution across public hospitals.
For many, insulin is a life-saving treatment that controls blood sugar and prevents serious health issues. The shipment aims to cover one month of insulin for 14% of the diabetic population in Ecuador, helping them maintain their health.
Erick Molina, Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at Direct Relief, emphasized the importance of collaboration: “Access to insulin isn’t just a necessity; it’s essential for daily life. This partnership shows what can be achieved when public health authorities and nonprofits come together.”
This donation also reflects a long-term commitment. Since 2018, Novo Nordisk has partnered with Direct Relief to provide diabetes medicine worldwide, totaling $424 million in donations. Hiliary Johnson from embecta noted that the partnership helps reach underserved communities, ensuring everyone has access to essential treatment.
The collaboration extends beyond just insulin. The history between Direct Relief and Junta de Beneficencia dates back to 1983, when they worked together to provide emergency medical supplies during natural disasters. Over the years, their partnership has evolved to tackle various healthcare challenges in Ecuador.
Experts agree that partnerships like this are vital, especially in times of crisis. According to a recent report from the World Health Organization, access to essential medicines like insulin remains a critical issue globally, with many still facing barriers to treatment.
In social media discussions, many users expressed happiness over the successful delivery of insulin. Comments praised the collaboration’s importance for public health, highlighting how partnerships can make a real difference.
