The Alternative for Germany (AfD) recently made headlines after its performance in the national election. Although they didn’t achieve the results their leaders anticipated, their 20.8 percent of the vote was historic for a far-right party in post-World War II Germany. This performance was significant enough to earn a congratulatory call from Elon Musk.
Alice Weidel, the AfD’s candidate for chancellor, revealed that she missed Musk’s call on election night. When she checked her phone the next morning, she noticed a missed call from the U.S. In her words, Musk “congratulated me personally” on their victory. Later, Musk publicly acknowledged her success on social media, sharing a message of congratulations from Hungary’s leader, Viktor Orban, and noted that the AfD could become the majority party by the next election.
Despite their impressive results, the AfD is facing challenges. Friedrich Merz, leader of the winning Christian Democrats, has ruled out forming a coalition with them. This decision means that the AfD will continue to be marginalized in German politics.
The AfD campaigns on issues like reducing irregular immigration, boosting deportations, and strengthening the economy, but parts of the party have been labeled extremist by German domestic intelligence. Notably, Vice President JD Vance met with Weidel in Munich, suggesting that mainstream parties shouldn’t dismiss far-right groups like the AfD. This perspective has raised eyebrows among European leaders.
Musk first endorsed the AfD last December. He used his social media platform, X, to back the party and hosted a lengthy conversation with Weidel. He even called into a loud party meeting in Halle, urging attendees to rally their friends and family to support the AfD. His comments included a controversial statement about the need to move past Germany’s historical guilt.
However, Musk’s high-profile support didn’t appear to sway voter opinions drastically. Tino Chrupalla, Weidel’s co-leader, acknowledged that while Musk’s endorsement might not draw direct votes, it did attract interest and donations from business circles. This suggests that Musk’s influence has a mixed impact on the AfD’s political landscape.
