Seth Abramson, an attorney and journalist, recently shared his thoughts on Elon Musk’s intelligence, sparking a lively debate online. He addressed Musk and his supporters on X, stating that they seem to be “in a cult” regarding their views on his IQ. Abramson claimed, “Musk has zero personal intellectual achievements.” He estimates Musk’s IQ to be between 100 and 110, suggesting there’s no solid evidence to support a higher score.

After his posts gained traction, especially in MAGA circles, Abramson returned to elaborate on his criticisms. He described Musk’s business history, highlighting that he was sued for allegedly stealing the idea for Zip2, which led to his dismissal when investors got involved. Abramson pointed out that Musk’s time at PayPal was similarly troubled, which ended with him being fired after a merger.
When Musk entered Tesla, Abramson noted that he was not initially a decisive contributor; his investments came at a challenging time for the company—though he eventually returned as CEO. His 1999 sale of Zip2 to COMPAQ brought him financial success, but it wasn’t always due to his leadership skills.
Abramson pointed to SpaceX as Musk’s most systematic success, emphasizing that part of this triumph stemmed from political lobbying, particularly to secure support from President Obama. He labeled other ventures like the Boring Company as failures, stating they primarily produced a controversial flamethrower.
Neuralink, another of Musk’s initiatives, is currently facing ethical scrutiny. Abramson mentioned Musk’s claims about Twitter/X as deceptive, arguing that Musk has poorly managed the platform.
Abramson wrapped up his critique by identifying a broader cultural issue: the tendency to equate wealth with intelligence in the U.S. He argued that this perspective is misguided and that around the world, people recognize that financial success doesn’t necessarily reflect intellectual ability.
He concluded by questioning the value of IQ as a measure of intelligence, noting that many Musk supporters lack tangible proof of his intellectual achievements.
