Elon Musk recently announced plans to reach out to federal workers again. He wants them to share what they’ve accomplished in their roles at the government. This comes after over a million employees responded to an earlier email from the White House, which is less than half of the total federal workforce.
During a press conference following President Donald Trump’s first cabinet meeting, Musk mentioned, “We got a partial response. We are going to send another email.” He aimed to encourage transparency and accountability within government agencies.
On Saturday, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) sent an email asking federal employees to document their achievements by a set deadline. Musk stated that failing to meet this deadline would be treated as a resignation. However, he later assured employees that those who didn’t respond would have a second chance. Yet, he warned that a second non-response could lead to termination.
This announcement caused some confusion. Several agencies, including the Department of Defense and the State Department, advised their employees not to respond to the OPM’s email.
As for the responses, the White House confirmed that more than a million workers participated, but that still left many unaccounted for. Trump expressed concern about those who didn’t reply. “Maybe they are going to be gone. Maybe they have other jobs,” he said during the same press conference.
Trump also supported Musk’s idea to follow up with another email, noting the importance of understanding who remains in the workforce. He indicated that trimming the federal workforce is a priority for his administration.
In line with this goal, the Trump administration earlier offered buyouts to federal employees who wished to leave. A spokesperson revealed that over 40,000 workers accepted the offer. Additionally, Trump signed an executive order limiting federal hiring, stating that agencies can only bring in one new employee for every four that leave. This rule excludes positions related to public safety and law enforcement.
The White House emphasized that the federal workforce exceeds 2.4 million, not including active-duty military and Postal Service employees. This focus on workforce management reflects ongoing efforts to streamline government operations and increase efficiency.
