Elon University’s Nursing Program Earns Prestigious Accreditation: What It Means for Future Nurses

Elon University’s nursing program has received initial accreditation from the National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). This recognition means the program meets strict standards for quality nursing education.

The NLN CNEA has endorsed both the traditional four-year program for high school graduates and the accelerated 16-month program designed for those with a bachelor’s degree in another field. This accreditation shows that these programs help students get ready for a successful career in nursing.

Programs accredited by the NLN CNEA focus on creating environments that support student learning and professional growth. They ensure that the curriculum is current, evidence-based, and responsive to the health care needs of society.

The NLN CNEA evaluates nursing programs based on five important standards:

• Setting goals for student success.
• Aligning the program’s mission with the university’s mission.
• Offering faculty professional development opportunities.
• Admitting and retaining skilled students.
• Maintaining a curriculum that reflects current trends in health care.

Currently, the nursing department has 207 students enrolled, with a strong representation of female students. The program is housed in the Gerald L. Francis Center, featuring a dedicated faculty team and a solid infrastructure to support student learning.

Both recent cohorts of the accelerated program achieved a remarkable 100% employment rate, with graduates now working at notable health organizations such as Cone Health and Johns Hopkins.

Elon University’s nursing programs will undergo another review by the NLN CNEA by September 2030. Associate Professor Cathy Quay emphasized the department’s dedication to preparing compassionate and well-trained nurses. She stated, “Our faculty and staff work hard every day to support our students and ourselves in achieving excellence.” This accreditation not only recognizes their efforts but also enhances future job opportunities for graduates.

Dean Maha Lund expressed excitement about the accreditation, highlighting the university’s commitment to training skilled nurses. She acknowledged the hard work of faculty and program leaders in achieving this recognition. As they move forward, Elon University is prepared to address the ongoing nursing shortage by producing well-prepared, compassionate graduates.
