Embark on a Summer Adventure: Join Concord University’s Exciting Program for Young Readers!

This summer, Concord University in Athens, W.Va., is making reading exciting for young learners. They’re hosting a fun reading camp aimed at sparking creativity, improving literacy, and nurturing a love for books.

The camp runs from July 14-18, 2025, from 9 a.m. to noon. It’s free, but spots are limited, so it’s best to act quickly if you’re interested.

Students will be grouped by age: Kindergarten to 2nd grade and 3rd to 5th grade. Each group will be led by graduate students working toward their master’s in reading education. They’ll create engaging activities that revolve around shared themes, keeping the fun alive while learning important skills.

Brenda Epling, the Reading Camp Director, emphasizes that “all activities aim to foster a love of reading and highlight literacy’s importance in a child’s life.” The themes remain a surprise, adding an element of excitement for the campers.

Research indicates that early literacy skills are crucial. According to a report by the National Institute for Literacy, children with strong reading skills in early grades are more likely to succeed later in school. Programs like this one not only make reading enjoyable but also set the foundation for future academic achievement.
