Embrace Heart Health: South Carolinians Invited to Adopt a Heart-Smart Lifestyle – ABC Columbia

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina Department of Public Health (SCDPH) wants everyone to adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle, especially in February, which is American Heart Month.

Heart disease is a serious issue. In 2022, it caused the most deaths in the U.S., with about 702,880 fatalities. In South Carolina alone, heart disease led to 12,014 deaths that same year. Factors like obesity, high blood pressure, and smoking contribute to this risk, and nearly three-quarters of adults in the state have at least one risk factor.

Women ages 20-39 are particularly at risk, with nearly 75% showing one or more modifiable risk factors. Additionally, the data shows that heart disease deaths are 27% more prevalent among African Americans compared to Whites in the state.

Here are some easy ways to take care of your heart:

  • Limit alcohol and quit smoking.
  • Eat a balanced diet that’s low in fat, cholesterol, and salt.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Get moving with 30 minutes of activity most days.
  • Schedule regular check-ups for cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • Manage diabetes if applicable.
  • Follow your doctor’s advice on medications.
