The Maui Food Bank is stepping into action to help residents of Hāna after the recent “March Kona Low” storm. Working with the Maui Emergency Management Agency and Maui United Way, they’re organizing helicopter flights to deliver 2,000 pounds of shelf-stable food.
Two flights are planned, each carrying around 1,000 pounds. While the community has requested fresh produce and frozen proteins, the food bank is focusing on shelf-stable items for safety during transport.
As of March 16, access to Hāna Highway between Hāna Town and Twin Falls is limited to essential workers and local traffic only. Once road access is restored, the food bank plans to send a Mobile Market truck with fresh deliveries later this week.
Hawaiian Electric has reported that about 240 customers in East Maui may be without power for several more days. Crews are working to repair damaged poles and downed lines, though most of Hāna town is back online.
The Maui Food Bank has been involved in daily briefings with the Maui Emergency Management Agency since March 11. They initially prepared to assist shelters in areas like Lahaina, Kīhei, and Kahului. But as the storm conditions worsened, they shifted focus to direct support.

- Distributed 221 Emergency Snack Bags between March 14 and 15.
- Provided shelter support with deliveries to Maui High School and the South Maui Community Park Gym.
- Supported hot meal services at active shelters through the Salvation Army.
They are working closely with other local organizations like Living Pono and the Pacific Birth Collective to coordinate efforts and avoid overlaps in services.
This level of community response shows dedication, especially during challenging times. According to a recent survey by the Hawaii Community Foundation, over 60% of residents expressed concerns about food insecurity following natural disasters.
