Emmys In Memoriam: The Stars We Lost, Including Hulk Hogan, Polly Holliday, and Tony Todd, Who Were Not Featured on Air

This year’s Emmys brought a heartfelt goodbye to beloved stars and creators from the TV world. During a touching tribute, Lainey Wilson and Vince Gill performed “Go Rest High on the Mountain.”

However, many notable names were missing. “Alice” star Polly Holliday, who passed away on September 9, and others like Hulk Hogan, Danielle Spencer from “What’s Happening,” Graham Greene, Tony Todd, and Leslie Charleson from “General Hospital” were not included. The segment also overlooked actors like Jonathan Joss from “King of the Hill,” Lynne Marie Stewart from “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse,” Jerry Adler from “Sopranos,” and Jay North, known as “Dennis the Menace.”

Phylicia Rashad introduced the tribute, remembering her “Cosby Show” son, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who died on July 20. “Malcolm-Jamal Warner remains in our hearts,” she said.

Stars like Maggie Smith from “Downton Abbey,” John Amos from “Good Times,” Loretta Swit from “MAS*H,” and musician Ozzy Osbourne were honored, along with behind-the-scenes legends like David Lynch. The tribute concluded with a tribute slide for composer Quincy Jones.

This year’s Emmys also recognized talents like Linda Lavin, Michelle Trachtenberg, Richard Chamberlain, and Loni Anderson. Yet, significant figures from the film industry like Gene Hackman, Val Kilmer, and Terence Stamp were left out.

Many of those omitted appeared on a longer scroll available on the TV Academy’s website. Each year, fans express disappointment over the absence of certain actors during the In Memoriam segment. The time limit for the segment often results in beloved faces being overlooked, especially those who are more recognized in films or music.

It’s important to note that the TV Academy can add names to the memorial list until shortly before the ceremony. Some fans may not realize that actors who passed away earlier in 2024, like Shannen Doherty and Richard Simmons, were honored during last year’s Emmys.

As the TV landscape continues to evolve, the need for inclusivity in tributes remains a significant point of discussion among fans and critics alike.
