Empowering Change: Leaders Advocate for Health and Poverty Solutions at Wisconsin State Capitol’s Black Advocacy Day

MADISON, Wis. – On Thursday, people gathered in the Capitol Rotunda for Black Advocacy Day. This event brought together leaders to talk about important issues facing Black residents in Wisconsin.

Hosted by the Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus and local community partners, the day began with a faith solidarity walk followed by a press conference. This was just the start. Participants engaged in workshops and met with lawmakers to discuss policies that matter.

During lunch, six panelists spoke about health and poverty, emphasizing how environmental factors affect the lives of Black Wisconsin residents. Milwaukee Pastor Walter Lanier from Progressive Baptist Church participated in the panel for the first time.

Lanier highlighted the link between poverty and access to resources. “The reality is that poverty affects everything—less resources mean less access, fewer opportunities, and diminished power,” he explained. He also noted that significant change comes when people unite.

“Being here in the Capitol, in the halls of power, is crucial,” he said. “It’s important for us to gather, share ideas, and recognize our collective strength.”

The event concluded with a reception at the Madison Concourse Hotel, fostering further conversation and connections among attendees.
