Empowering Communities: American Rescue Workers Enhance Food Pantry with Client Choice Options

The American Rescue Workers (ARW) are calling for volunteers as they launch a new program to expand their food pantry. Jennifer Rempe, their Director of Development, emphasized that their pantry is one of the largest partners of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, yet they operate from a small space.

Currently, the pantry assists around 1,000 families each month—about 50 to 110 people daily. This demand has grown significantly. From January to July this year, they served 224 more people than during the same time last year, totaling 18,771 individuals. Rising grocery prices and cuts to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits put additional strain on families. Those earning just above the poverty line often face tough choices each month.

Many of ARW’s clients are part of the ALICE population—those who are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, but Employed. Rempe explained that these individuals work minimum-wage jobs but still struggle to make ends meet. When bills come due, food often takes a backseat.

To better serve these families, ARW is transforming into a Client Choice Food Pantry. Here, clients can select their own food items like they would in a grocery store, allowing them dignity and choice. Previously, clients picked up pre-packed boxes of food without options, which sometimes included ingredients they couldn’t use.

To support this change, ARW has utilized grant funding to build a custom shed that will serve as the new pantry space. This shed will allow clients to shop for the items they want. It also includes a ramp for those with disabilities, ensuring everyone can access food. The pantry will stock staples like rice, pasta, and canned goods. ARW also seeks funding for freezers to store perishables.

Right now, ARW needs volunteers to help guide clients through the new system. Volunteers will assist clients in navigating the pantry and make the experience more welcoming. Ideal volunteers are friendly and supportive, often retirees looking to give back. Shifts are flexible, lasting two to six hours, and require a background check for safety.

This initiative reflects a growing awareness of food insecurity in the United States. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that in 2021, over 10% of households faced food insecurity, a figure that has risen in recent years due to economic pressures.
