Empowering Futures: Türkiye’s Environment Ministry Unveils Climate Adaptation Training Program

This week, Türkiye kicked off a vital training program to tackle climate change issues. It’s part of a project called “Strengthening Climate Change Adaptation Action in Türkiye,” funded by the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The program will help implement the newly updated Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan for 2024-2030. This plan aims to tackle pressing climate challenges like heatwaves, floods, and biodiversity loss.

During the launch in Ankara, Berna Yiğit, an environmental engineer with the ministry, pointed out that climate change is not just a future concern; it’s happening now. She shared alarming statistics from the World Meteorological Organization: global temperatures have risen by 1.55 degrees Celsius (2.79 degrees Fahrenheit) since the pre-industrial era. This data emphasizes the need for immediate action.

Yiğit noted that Türkiye’s first adaptation plan, created in 2011, laid the groundwork for today’s efforts. The new strategy aims to enhance local involvement, particularly at city and sector levels, to boost community resilience. Local actions are essential for effective adaptation.

The two-day training program is a major step towards applying the adaptation strategy in real life. It will cover various topics and involve around 250 participants from different regions.

The project’s broader goal is to strengthen societal resilience through awareness and training initiatives. It also focuses on creating climate adaptation plans and improving decision-making tools. A grant program will further promote local actions, providing resources for communities to respond to climate change challenges.
