In London, a new initiative aimed at helping Indian students find jobs in the UK was launched during the India-UK Student Leadership Summit. The Indian National Students Association (INSA) UK teamed up with Creoo to create the Indian National Students Employability Council (INSEC). This organization will focus on improving career outcomes for the 166,000 Indian students currently in Britain, who make up the largest international student group in the country.
Ayesha Goyal, Founder and CEO of Creoo, emphasized the urgency for change. She stated that despite numerous discussions about international students over the past 18 months, many still experience little progress. INSEC seeks to change that by not just talking but taking action.
The initiative will kick off with a National Career Roadshow at major universities like the London School of Economics and University College London. They also plan to conduct a study called ‘Indian Student Outcomes’ to better understand the challenges Indian students face in the job market.
Amit Tiwari, the National President of INSA UK, pointed out that students often don’t receive any feedback on their job applications, which adds to their frustration. He called for a supportive network where students can voice their concerns and connect with one another.
The summit, led by Labour MP Navendu Mishra, aimed to bring attention to the issues affecting Indian students in the UK. Mishra highlighted the importance of community, especially for those who have moved away from home. He noted that a strong representation is crucial to ensure that their voices are heard accurately.
As India and the UK strengthen their ties, highlighted by the recent trade deal established during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, there’s a growing need for Indian students to engage with their host community. Lord Krish Raval emphasized this during the summit, encouraging students to take advantage of volunteering opportunities, which can enhance their experience and connections.
Students also expressed concerns about the UK’s Graduate Route, which allows them to work for 18 months post-graduation. Many fear that bias may lead employers to overlook them. In response, INSA UK is working with various government bodies to ensure that Indian students are treated fairly in the job market.
This initiative reflects a broader trend where organizations are starting to address the unique challenges faced by international students, particularly in the wake of increasing global mobility and changes in the workforce. As discussions around the inclusiveness of the job market gain traction, it will be essential for various stakeholders to work together to create a fair environment for all students.
