The Indian Army has joined forces with Bharat Forge and PLR Systems to procure 425,000 indigenous Close Quarter Battle (CQB) carbines. This deal, worth ₹2,772 crore, marks a significant step in modernizing military equipment. Bharat Forge will handle 60% of the production, while PLR Systems will manage the remaining 40%. Both companies plan to start delivering these carbines next year.
This move is not just about replacing old weapons; it aligns with the government’s ‘Make In India’ initiative, promoting self-reliance in defense. The new carbines will be lightweight, easy to maneuver, and equipped for modern attachments like optical and tactical sights. Lieutenant General Ajay Kumar, the Director General of Infantry, highlighted this modernization trend. He stated, “The modernisation of Infantry forces is progressing across multiple domains—lethality, mobility, battlefield transparency, situational awareness, survivability, and training.” His perspective reflects a broader goal of evolving military capabilities to meet contemporary challenges.
