Empowering India’s Future: Meet the Young Environmental Innovators Shaping Change at IIT Delhi 2025

In June 2023, something exciting happened at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. A group of 106 students, aged 15 to 19, gathered from all over India for the Change Makers 2025 Summer Bootcamp. Their mission? To tackle urgent environmental issues and come up with real solutions.

The campus buzzed with energy as students dived into topics like carbon emissions, microplastics, e-waste, and heatwaves. They formed small teams and brainstormed innovative ideas, supported by IIT professors and industry experts.

Professor Jay Dhariwal, who coordinated the event, expressed the importance of solving these problems for India’s future. “This wasn’t just a random gathering; we chose students who were genuinely eager to make a difference,” he noted. Out of around 500 applicants, only the most passionate were selected.

One standout project was Re-Volt Ride, created by high school students aiming to cut down carbon emissions from personal devices. Devesh, a student involved in the project, highlighted how small devices like phone chargers contribute to CO₂ emissions. Their solution? A bicycle-mounted generator that produces energy when you pedal. This not only promotes cycling but also reduces individual carbon footprints.

Another team, Neer-Veer, focused on water waste in agriculture, a critical issue as this sector uses about 80% of India’s freshwater. They designed Rambaan, a solar-powered irrigation system that helps farmers make data-driven decisions. This innovative approach uses various sensors and works offline, which is vital in rural areas.

Throughout the bootcamp, these students engaged in workshops, discussions, and pitched their ideas to experts. Dhariwal commended their commitment and creativity, noting, “They really showed that they are eager to learn and contribute.”

Looking ahead, many prototypes from the bootcamp are set to be further developed, even entering startup competitions. Dhariwal encouraged young changemakers to stay curious and sincere, quoting Mahatma Gandhi: “There is enough for everyone’s need, but not for everyone’s greed.”

This initiative highlights the potential of youth innovation in the face of a climate crisis, showing that with creativity and dedication, young minds can lead the way toward a sustainable future.
