Women are making strides in roles that were once dominated by men. No longer limited to just a few sectors, their presence is growing in fields like mining, logistics, tourism, and even automotive manufacturing.

Last year, Tata Steel launched an all-women shift at its Noamundi iron mine in Jharkhand. This initiative aims to create a fair workplace and empower women in industries where they have been historically underrepresented. The women in this shift handle all mining operations, including operating heavy machinery like drills and dozers.
In the automotive sector, Tata Motors is also breaking ground. At their plant in Pimpri-Chinchwad, over 1,700 women have been crafting Tata Harrier and Tata Safari SUVs for more than three years. This effort has increased the plant’s production from 150,000 vehicles in 2020 to over 500,000 in 2022, showcasing the impact of female talent in manufacturing.
Logistics is another area seeing significant improvements in gender diversity. Maersk operates an all-women facility in Ponneri, Chennai. This site employs women in various roles, such as loading, unloading, security, and administration. The initiative has increased women’s representation in the workforce from 3% to 13% and plans to continue advancing gender equality in the logistics field.
In the tourism sector, Madhya Pradesh introduced its first all-women-operated hotel, Amaltas, in Pachmarhi. As tourism in the state continues to grow, this hotel aims to enhance the industry’s appeal while empowering women in hospitality.
Another noteworthy project is Handloom Cafe in Pranpur, Chanderi. This cafe is part of a crafts village and is run entirely by women. It offers local cuisine and visitors can also learn about Chanderi saree weaving. The cafe not only provides jobs but also supports local artisans and promotes women entrepreneurship.
Delhivery, a logistics company, is also investing in women-led facilities. Their latest all-women hub in Mayapuri, Delhi, is part of a broader strategy to increase female representation in logistics. Over the past year, they’ve seen female recruitment grow by 60%, with women now making up nearly 13% of their workforce. This focus highlights the company’s commitment to creating a more inclusive environment.
Savana, a fashion platform with a warehouse in Gurugram, has 80% of its workforce made up of women. They emphasize safety and growth opportunities through training programs and flexible work arrangements, ensuring that women feel empowered and recognized in their roles.
These initiatives across various sectors reflect a positive shift towards gender equality in the workforce, showcasing women’s contributions and capabilities in diverse fields.
