Since launching online in 2021 as Women in Aquaculture, our program has grown significantly. We held our first in-person studio in Bali in 2022, and just wrapped up the second Women in Ocean Food Innovation Studio in La Paz, Mexico.
These events gather talented female entrepreneurs who are shaking up the aquaculture scene. They’re not just running businesses; they’re leading a powerful movement. With their innovative ideas, these women are creating sustainable solutions and challenging old practices in the seafood industry.
From seaweed bioplastics to AI tools for monitoring fish farms, startups led by women are changing the game in aquaculture. For example, companies like SOS Biotech are working on sustainable feed options, while Pacific Bioculture focuses on climate-resilient farming techniques. Marulho empowers local fishers and farmers through community-driven initiatives. These women are not only solving critical issues but also paving the way for sustainable seafood in the future.
However, the path isn’t always easy. The women in aquaculture face various challenges, but they turn these obstacles into opportunities. They address issues like climate change and food security, showing that a diverse approach sparks innovation.
The Women in Ocean Food Innovation Studio acts as a launchpad for future female leaders in aquaculture. Their creativity is infectious, and their impact is just starting to unfold.
Mariana Flores Vargas, community manager for Hatch Blue in LATAM, points out, “This initiative is reshaping the industry. Soon, we’ll see more women as leaders and innovators.” This vision highlights the importance of female role models in the region.
