Children as young as six are taking charge in the fight against climate change. Recently, a national speech contest organized by the online learning platform 51Talk showcased the voices of 15 young participants, aged six to twelve, who passionately addressed environmental issues and sustainability.
The winner, 12-year-old Khusaiba Omar Jumaa Al Rumaithi, will represent the UAE at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil this November. Her speech conveyed a powerful message: that everyone, even kids, can contribute to protecting the planet. She stressed the impact of simple daily actions—like saving water, cutting down on waste, and planting trees—which can collectively lead to significant change.
Khusaiba’s mother, Shamma Al Dhaheri, shared that her daughter’s enthusiasm for environmental matters led her teacher to nominate her for the contest. Even though Khusaiba received help with the presentation format, the ideas were entirely her own. This reflects her deep concern for the environment and desire to motivate others.
