A rare species of frog, known as the galaxy frog, is feared lost after photographers may have damaged its habitat while pursuing the perfect shot. These tiny creatures, about the size of a fingertip, are the only representatives of their family and are found under logs in Kerala’s lush rainforest.
Rajkumar K P, a researcher from the Zoological Society of London, first discovered these frogs in early 2020. Unfortunately, his follow-up visits during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed their mysterious disappearance. It seemed clear that something had disrupted their environment.
When Rajkumar returned, he found broken logs and trampled vegetation—all signs of disturbance. Initially, he suspected local wildlife like mongooses might be to blame, but further investigation revealed that groups of photographers had been exploring the area. They had been moving logs in search of these elusive frogs, often disturbing their habitat and improperly handling them for photographs.
Some photographers didn’t take necessary precautions, such as wearing gloves. Galaxy frogs breathe through their skin, making them particularly vulnerable. Tragically, it was reported that two frogs died after being mishandled during photo sessions. One tracker observed that the frogs were moved around to capture better images, putting their health at risk with no consideration for their delicate nature.
Repeated searches by Rajkumar later yielded no results. The emotional toll was profound, as he felt powerless against the damage done. He expressed concern over the influence of high-profile individuals who sometimes grant permissions to these photography groups, allowing them to bypass regulations.
Dr. Benjamin Tapley, curator of reptiles and amphibians at ZSL, highlighted the gravity of the situation, calling the galaxy frogs a unique part of our ecosystem. He emphasized the importance of ethical practices in wildlife photography. Each loss of a species like the galaxy frog could diminish the rich biodiversity of our planet.
Recent studies show that human activities, including habitat disturbance, significantly increase the risks faced by endangered species. In a 2022 survey, about 70% of wildlife photographers acknowledged that they sometimes prioritize getting the shot over the well-being of the animals.
We must remember that beautiful creatures like the galaxy frog deserve protection, and we must act responsibly in their habitats.
