End of an Era: America’s Historic Beer Brand Discontinues After 177 Years

One of America’s long-standing beer brands, Schlitz Premium, is going on a hiatus after over 175 years. This iconic beer, which started in Milwaukee back in the 1840s, was once a giant in the industry. Pabst Brewing Co. confirmed recently that Wisconsin Brewing Company will produce the final batch later this month.

“Rising costs for storage and shipping made this decision tough,” said Zac Nadile, Pabst’s head of brand strategy. He added that all brands on hiatus remain close to their hearts and expressed hope for future revivals.

Schlitz was popular for its slogan, “the beer that made Milwaukee famous,” and it was once the largest brewery in the U.S. It rose to fame during tough times, like the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, when it provided much-needed beer to the city. This history of resilience has kept the brand in the hearts of many fans.

But Schlitz’s popularity waned in the 1970s after recipe changes affected its taste. It changed hands several times, eventually being bought by Pabst in 1999.

Now, Kirby Nelson, the brewmaster at Wisconsin Brewing Company, said they want to celebrate this historic brand properly. “Schlitz deserves a sendoff with dignity and respect,” he noted.

As people share their memories online, reactions point to a sense of nostalgia. Social media buzz reflects the impact Schlitz had on many lives, with hashtags related to the brand trending during its farewell.

In today’s competitive beer market, brands like Heineken are also facing challenges, planning to cut thousands of jobs. Data from industry analysts suggest that craft beers have changed the landscape, making it much harder for traditional brands to thrive.

While Schlitz may take a break, its legacy remains alive in the hearts of many loyal drinkers. Cheers to the memories!
