Baguio City Enhances Crime and Traffic Monitoring with New Technology

Baguio City is working to improve safety and traffic management through technology. The city government plans to buy 40 new automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) CCTV cameras. These cameras will be placed in various locations to monitor traffic patterns and identify violators quickly.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong emphasized the importance of these cameras. They not only capture license plates but also help keep track of vehicles, making it easier to manage traffic and respond to crimes. Adam Bert Lacay, a system analyst at the Smart City Command Center (SC3), explained that ANPR technology allows for targeted searches, enabling authorities to blacklist or whitelist vehicles based on specific situations.

Currently, Baguio City has 40 ANPR cameras operational at key points like entry and exit areas, as well as major intersections. In total, there are 115 closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) across the city center, all monitored by the SC3. This system plays a vital role in enhancing public safety and managing traffic flow.

In terms of effectiveness, the SC3 has processed a significant number of requests: 495 for CCTV footage and another 366 for data extraction related to traffic accidents, missing items, and thefts. This capability illustrates how technology can aid in resolving incidents and keeping the city safe.

Moreover, the SC3’s responsibilities extend beyond traffic monitoring. It also includes systems for air quality, weather updates, flood warnings, earthquake monitoring, and managing police units. Lacay pointed out that real-time data helps the city handle environmental and public safety risks better.

Statistics show a growing trend in urban areas adopting smart technologies. According to a recent report from the International Data Corporation, smart city spending is expected to reach nearly $1 trillion by 2025. This highlights the importance of technology in urban planning and safety.
