Today in Dhaka, Nuria Lopez, Chairperson of the European Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (EuroCham), met with Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the Adviser to the Ministries of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Water Resources, and Information and Broadcasting.
During their meeting, held at the Ministry of Environment, both women addressed the urgent need for effective guidelines on Extended Producer Responsibility, particularly focusing on managing plastic waste from businesses. This issue is increasingly pressing as plastic pollution continues to rise globally. A recent report from the World Economic Forum found that the amount of plastic waste could nearly triple by 2040 if no significant action is taken.
Rizwana underscored Bangladesh’s commitment to developing a fair and sustainable framework for waste management. Her vision includes a unified compliance framework that prevents disparities among businesses, ensuring that all stakeholders can contribute equally to environmental efforts.
Lopez emphasized that European companies are dedicated to sustainable practices. She mentioned that maintaining a commitment to 100% recyclable packaging is a priority for many firms in Europe. This aligns with the European Union’s broader environmental goals, which aim to combat climate change through rigorous regulations.
In light of these discussions, the two leaders decided to accelerate the finalization of the guidelines, incorporating insights from stakeholder consultations and learning from the laws of the European Union and regional neighbors.
