The European Commission recently shared its “Vision for Agriculture and Food,” a plan that will guide its work through 2040. This vision focuses on key areas that impact agriculture and food policies across Europe.
A top priority in this vision is food and feed safety. A special task force will be set up to make sure that food safety rules are followed. This team will include experts from the Commission and Member States. Their mission is to strengthen import checks and improve safety controls.
The Commission plans to enforce stricter EU standards for products coming into Europe, particularly regarding pesticides and animal welfare. They aim to prevent the import of goods with harmful or banned pesticides. In 2025, they will evaluate the effects of this rule on competition within the EU and its global impact, and may suggest legal changes based on their findings.
Another important goal is to enhance access to biopesticides in the EU. In 2025, the Commission will propose a plan that defines biocontrol active substances. This will allow Member States to give temporary approvals for products containing these substances while they are still being evaluated. Additionally, there will be a fast-tracked process for their approval, and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) will receive more resources to speed up risk assessments for these products.
Lastly, the Commission is set to introduce a Water Resilience Strategy. This strategy will focus on using water more efficiently, reducing pollution, and tackling the overuse of water resources.
