India is about to launch its first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express on the Guwahati–Howrah route. This new service will change how people travel overnight by train. Instead of waiting lists, passengers will only get tickets for confirmed berths, ensuring a smoother journey.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that all safety tests are complete. The Prime Minister is expected to kick off the service on January 17. With this initiative, the Railways aims to minimize uncertainty for travelers.
What to Expect
The sleeper service offers three classes: 1AC, 2AC, and 3AC. According to a Railway Board circular, reservations will be limited. Special quotas for women, seniors, and people with disabilities will still apply, but no extra quotas will be added.
Pricing Breakdown
Passengers will pay a base fare, with additional taxes. For trips up to 400 km, fares start at ₹1,520 for 1AC, ₹1,240 for 2AC, and ₹960 for 3AC. Rates increase based on distance, with the highest fare for journeys up to 550 km being ₹2,090 for 1AC.
Train Features
This sleeper train can travel safely at speeds up to 180 kmph. Travelers will find comfortable berths, automatic doors, and an upgraded suspension system. Safety measures include KAVACH technology, CCTV cameras, and emergency communication units. The train is also designed with accessibility in mind, featuring facilities for those with disabilities.

This service marks a significant milestone for long-distance travel in India. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is expected to set the standard for future sleeper routes, offering comfort and reliability for overnight journeys in the years to come.
