Markwood graduated in 2022 from South Allegheny High School in Pennsylvania. A spokesperson for the school district described him as a “hard-working, highly resilient young man.” He played linebacker at Wheeling University in West Virginia but left the team the following year to pursue work opportunities.

Witnesses say Markwood leaped over a 3-foot railing while celebrating Andrew McCutchen’s go-ahead double during the seventh inning. He had taken off his shirt and poured beer on himself before the moment. This act of enthusiasm, however, led to his devastating fall.

His former coach at Wheeling, Zac Bruney, praised Markwood as a “very good young man,” and others echoed similar sentiments. Mike Brown, the athletic director at South Allegheny, highlighted Markwood’s resilience and kindness, noting that he positively impacted the community.
