FRISCO, Texas — The West team triumphed over the East 21-17 in this year’s Shrine Bowl, held at the Ford Center near Dallas. Iowa quarterback Mark Gronowski was named Offensive MVP, throwing for 86 yards and rushing for 28. Wisconsin’s Mason Reiger, with four tackles and three sacks, earned Defensive MVP.
The East took a brief lead in the fourth quarter. Duke’s Wesley Williams sacked UConn’s Joe Fagnano in the end zone, leading to a fumble recovered for a touchdown by Aaron Hall, a former teammate.
But the West responded with a game-winning drive. Tulsa running back Dom Richardson pounded out 51 yards during the crucial possession, capping it off with a 3-yard touchdown run just six seconds before the game ended.
For NFL scouts, most of the significant work occurred before the game. Last year, 51 players from the Shrine Bowl were drafted, and that number could very well rise this year. With strong rosters, many players made an impression.
Skyler Bell, a standout receiver, caught 102 passes last season, showcasing excellent route-running skills. He demonstrated quickness and separation during practice, clocking in at 20.1 miles per hour. His performance may elevate him toward the top of the later rounds of the NFL Draft.
The speedy running back, Heidenreich, also captured attention, reaching 20.01 MPH during the events. Known for his versatile skills, he could become a valuable third-down option in the NFL.
Defensive lineman Jackson made waves with his size and quick feet, measuring in at 6’5″ and 328 pounds. Even though he had a quieter season than last, he’s seen as a solid prospect for various team schemes.
Another impressive athlete, Lawrence, led all defensive prospects with a GPS speed of 19.32 MPH. Despite being a bit light for an edge player at 6’4″, his burst and rush moves could turn him into a specialist in the NFL.
In contrast, 5’8” Wetjen was nearly impossible to cover and showed great potential as a slot receiver and special-teams asset, drawing comparisons to last year’s Efton Chism.
On the offensive side, tight end Raridon impressed with his ability to get open and catch, complementing his 19.2 MPH speed. He might emerge as one of the top tight ends drafted from this event.
