Winona State’s baseball team faced off against Minnesota Crookston today, winning one game and losing the other. They took game one with an 8-6 victory, while the second game ended with a score of 10-3 against them. After these matches, Winona State’s overall record is now 15-14, and they sit fifth in the NSIC with an 11-9 conference record.
In the first game, the Warriors fell behind early when the Golden Eagles hit two solo home runs. Ben Hefel quickly answered with a two-run homer in the second inning, tying the game. Then, in a strong fourth inning, Winona State scored four runs, including a solo shot from Alex Berreth and a double from Hefel, pushing their lead to 6-2. Minnesota Crookston rallied, scoring three runs to narrow the gap, but Winona State managed to secure those last two unearned runs in the sixth, finishing the game with an 8-6 win. Max Strecker was the winning pitcher, while Cole Stanchina earned the save.
Game two saw a different story as Minnesota Crookston surged to a quick 5-0 lead after a productive second inning. Though Winona State fought back, scoring in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, UMC responded with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Warriors couldn’t score again, ending the game at 10-3. Boyd Skelley took the loss, and Cole Fuecker stood out with three hits for Winona State.
Notably, Josh Hatano shined in game one, going 3-3 with an RBI. Wesley Johnson pitched well, lasting 3.2 innings with two earned runs on his record, while Brian Wrenn performed excellently in relief in the second game, striking out three without allowing any runs.
