Valerie Jones loves a challenge. In 2022, she won a Fulbright Scholar Award, and instead of seeing it as a peak achievement, she wondered, “What’s next?”
As the interim associate dean for research and faculty affairs at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications, Valerie is now a two-time Fulbright recipient, an honor not many at her university can claim.
Currently, Jones is in Norway, collaborating with the University of Agder until June 6. Her focus? Enhancing the university’s global reach and building connections in journalism and communications. One of her key tasks is to review and improve the branding of Agder’s Information Systems Ph.D. program, aiming to attract top international candidates.
“I’m grateful for the support from my colleagues at UNL; networking has been crucial,” she shares.
At the University of Agder, Valerie will lead workshops on social media strategies and give lectures on topics like responsible AI and digital ethics. She believes that blending academic research with real-world experience is vital in today’s fast-changing landscape.
The Fulbright Specialist Program links U.S. scholars with international institutions for collaborative projects focused on knowledge sharing. It’s part of a larger initiative aimed at fostering connections across cultures.
Since its launch in 1946, the Fulbright Program has impacted over 400,000 individuals—from students to artists—to study and work abroad.
