Exciting Changes Ahead: TNT Takes Over Eurosport in the UK as Warner Bros. Discovery Revamps Its Sports Lineup

Eurosport, a popular sports channel in the UK, will close its doors next month. This change comes as Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) reorganizes its sports offerings. Live sports and shows from Eurosport will now be featured on the TNT channels, run in partnership with BT, a major UK telecom.

Eurosport has been a staple in the UK for 35 years, covering cycling, tennis, winter sports, and combat sports. Fans can still catch their favorite events on TNT and through the Discovery+ streaming service.

The decision to merge these sports channels was first hinted at during the creation of the TNT joint venture between WBD and BT. WBD has confirmed that this change is specific to the UK, and Eurosport will continue to operate in other parts of Europe.

WBD acquired Eurosport in 2015. After merging with Warner Media in 2022, the two companies combined their sports divisions, resulting in the formation of TNT Sports. The BT Sport channels were renamed to TNT soon after.

Scott Young, WBD Sports Europe’s Group Senior Vice President, mentioned that the launch of TNT Sports allows for a fresh approach to sports broadcasting in the UK. They aim to modernize the sports business model and create a stronger connection with fans.

The TNT channels boast a wide array of sports, including crucial events like the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. Coverage will also extend to the Olympics, cycling, tennis, and more.

Young emphasized the company’s goal to create a single hub for viewers’ favorite sports. He noted that this transition was well-timed, allowing TNT Sports to be in a strong position before moving Eurosport’s content.

Production will remain under WBD’s management. Changes made earlier have already streamlined operations, with production teams shifted to new facilities in London’s Chiswick and Stockley Park.

The integration will enhance cross-promotion of different sports. This means, for instance, that a live Premier League match could seamlessly transition into coverage of an ongoing cycling event. This live-to-live approach aims to keep viewers engaged and connected.

Audiences will find programming across TNT’s four existing channels, along with additional overflow channels during significant sports events. Highlights and free coverage will still be available on the Quest channel, which will expand its sports content and documentaries.
