In a groundbreaking study from Oxford University, researchers have successfully created a new form of carbon called cyclo[48]carbon. This molecule is unique because it can be studied at room temperature, making it a significant milestone in chemistry. The findings were published in the journal Science.

Creating carbon in this form is quite rare. Previously, the only known example was the synthesis of fullerenes in 1990. The cyclo[48]carbon molecule was made as a catenane. This means it has a ring structure threaded through three other macrocycles, which helps to stabilize it and make it easier to study.

Before this study, scientists could only examine pure carbon rings in extremely low temperatures or in the gas phase. Now, with this new synthesis, the cyclo[48]carbon can exist in solution at 20°C, with a half-life of 92 hours. This achievement relied on choosing a stable carbon structure and using mild conditions to reveal the final product.

The researchers used several techniques to study the cyclocarbon, including mass spectrometry and various forms of spectroscopy. Notably, they observed a single intense carbon signal in NMR analysis, indicating that all carbons in the molecule are in similar environments. This lends strong support to the structure they proposed.

Dr. Yueze Gao, the study’s lead author, emphasized this work as a key step in understanding cyclocarbons better. Professor Harry Anderson, a senior author, spoke about the frustrations and challenges faced over the years but is pleased with this breakthrough, which stems from research efforts dating back to 2016.
