Cynthia Erivo stood before a bustling audience of theater owners, sharing her astonishment over the past year. The Broadway adaptation’s incredible achievements include 10 Oscar nominations, over $433 million in ticket sales in 2024, and a lasting impact on pop culture.

Erivo and Ariana Grande unveiled the trailer for "Wicked: For Good," set to hit theaters on November 21. The teaser picks up where the first film left off, showing Elphaba, played by Erivo, defying the Wizard (portrayed by Jeff Goldblum) while she navigates her new life as a fugitive. We see Prince Fiyero, played by Jonathan Bailey, searching for Elphaba, caught in a web of propaganda that paints her in a bad light.

In the trailer, Elphaba and Glinda’s relationship takes center stage again. Viewers catch glimpses of pivotal moments, including a wedding involving Glinda and Fiyero, and hints of Fiyero turning against the Wizard to assist Elphaba. The tension builds as Elphaba ominously quotes Dorothy, saying, “I’m off to see the Wizard.”

Grande noted the character growth she faces, saying Glinda must reflect on her true self. Erivo emphasized Elphaba’s journey towards using her powers for good, even in exile. Producer Marc Platt promised richer character development that would explore their struggles and triumphs in greater depth.

Director Jon M. Chu highlighted that this sequel moves beyond the classic story’s beginning. The trailer features familiar faces, like Dorothy, as she walks the yellow brick road, echoing lines that remind audiences of the original tale.

This sequel not only expands the world of Oz but dives deeper into the dynamics between its characters. In a world where Disney’s adaptations have drawn heavy box office returns, "Wicked: For Good" is poised to capture both fans of the original story and new audiences alike.

As the anticipation grows, projections for the sequel’s success mirror those of the first film. According to Box Office Mojo, "Wicked" had become the third-highest domestic earner in 2024, a remarkable feat that sets high expectations for the sequel.

With the release date approaching, it’s clear that "Wicked: For Good" is not just attempting to recapture magic but is set to offer an even deeper exploration of friendship, ambition, and what it means to fight for one’s beliefs.
