LOUISVILLE — Jason Smith, M.D., Ph.D., has stepped up as the interim CEO of UofL Health, taking the reins from Tom Miller, who resigned after seven impactful years. Smith, who was previously the chief medical officer, is seen as a strong leader to guide the organization into its next chapter.
Gerry Bradley, president of the University of Louisville, praised Smith’s track record in health care. “His clinical experience and innovative approach make him the right person for this role,” Bradley stated. With Smith at the helm, there’s hope for continued growth and improved health care services in the community.
Miller, who led UofL Health since it became its own entity in 2018, oversaw significant advancements. Under his leadership, the organization expanded to a $2.7 billion system, becoming Louisville’s third-largest employer. He expressed pride in his mission to enhance community health over his 50-year career, citing health care’s essential role during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Smith joined UofL Health when it was established and has been a vital part of its journey. During the pandemic, he emerged as a trusted voice, offering guidance and support to the Kentuckiana region. His efforts were recognized last year when he received the Paragon Award from the Greater Louisville Medical Society for his leadership and advocacy for gun violence victims.
With more than 14,000 health professionals, UofL Health serves patients from various backgrounds. Its facilities include nine hospitals and four medical centers, making it an integral part of the local health landscape. The organization is affiliated with the University of Louisville School of Medicine, emphasizing education and innovation in health care.
Smith has an impressive educational background. He earned an undergraduate degree in chemistry from Wright State University, followed by a medical degree and a Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics from The Ohio State University and the University of Louisville, respectively. He also holds an MBA from Indiana University.
As he embarks on this new leadership role, Smith aims to continue the mission of delivering quality, patient-centered care to the community. His commitment is evident in his words, “I’m excited to serve this organization and work alongside our dedicated team.”
