Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro are teaming up to create a live-action film and TV universe around Magic: The Gathering. This is a big step for Hasbro, as the trading card game is its first brand to reach $1 billion.
The first project will be a movie, with plans for TV shows and other content to follow. This universe aims to expand and attract both old fans and newcomers.
Magic: The Gathering began in 1993, and is the world’s first trading card game. It has gathered over 50 million fans worldwide. Players act as powerful spellcasters called planeswalkers, who summon creatures, cast spells, and employ magical artifacts to defeat their foes. The game is celebrated for its strategic depth and offers players thousands of unique cards to build their decks.
Over the years, Magic: The Gathering has grown into a global sensation. There are competitive tournaments and professional play circuits, along with a vibrant market for rare cards. The game features a rich storyline set across various fantasy worlds, which is explored through its card sets, novels, and even collaborations with franchises like Dungeons & Dragons and Lord of the Rings.
Mary Parent, Chairman of Worldwide Production at Legendary, expressed excitement about the project. She said, “We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering. We look forward to creating a multimedia universe that thrills fans of the game.”
Zev Foreman, from Hasbro Entertainment, also shared his enthusiasm. He remarked that this partnership combines an iconic brand with a strong creative team. Magic: The Gathering has inspired years of imaginative storytelling, making it an excellent fit for Legendary’s approach to major intellectual properties.
Legendary has a solid history of crafting films based on both original concepts and popular adaptations, including recent hits like Dune and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. They are also working on a Minecraft Movie and adaptations of Street Fighter among other exciting projects.
Since launching in 2023, Hasbro Entertainment has sought to leverage its popular brands. They are working on adaptations of Clue for film and TV with Sony and have plans for a movie based on Monopoly. They have also created game shows based on Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble, which aired recently. Additionally, there’s an animated Magic: The Gathering series in the works at Netflix, led by showrunner Terry Matalas.
