One of Jersey City’s major universities is gearing up for a big change. New Jersey City University (NJCU) will soon be renamed Kean Jersey City after deciding to merge with Kean University. This decision comes amid ongoing financial challenges that have plagued NJCU for several years.
The trouble started when a state report revealed that former president Sue Henderson mishandled $14 million in pandemic relief funds. She resigned with a hefty severance package, including $288,000, a car, and a housing subsidy, which raised eyebrows and sparked public outcry.
Last year, the New Jersey Monitor reported that NJCU faced nearly $300 million in debt and pressing needs for infrastructure upgrades. The Board of Trustees voted recently to merge with Kean University, seeking a stable partner to help resolve the financial crisis. They stated, “The Board’s decision follows a thorough evaluation of strategic options aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of the University’s mission.”
This merger is expected to help NJCU recover from a drastic financial downturn. Just two years ago, the university boasted a surplus of over $100 million, but that quickly turned into a $67.4 million deficit. A state-appointed fiscal monitor will continue to oversee the university through at least September to ensure a smooth transition.
Under the new name Kean Jersey City, the institution aims to enhance educational options for its diverse student body. Over 60% of students come from Hudson County, and more than half are first-generation college attendees. This demographic emphasizes the university’s commitment to accessibility and community service. Approximately 45% of the undergraduates are Latino, and 21% are Black, reflecting the rich diversity of the area.
In recent years, NJCU has focused on campus improvements, especially through projects like University Place. However, a previously planned arts center failed, hinting at deeper financial struggles that ultimately led to this merger.
While the exact timeline for the merger and the rebranding remains unclear, this shift signals a new chapter for Kean Jersey City. With a renewed focus on student support and community development, the university aims to turn its fortunes around and continue being a hub of education in Jersey City.
