U.S. Rep. Harold “Hal” Rogers from Kentucky has secured $7.54 million in federal funding for Morehead State University’s (MSU) Space Science Center. This funding aims to support payload operations for both government and commercial space missions, enriching the hands-on aerospace education for students.
“Students at MSU are not just spectators; they’re getting involved in NASA’s moon missions and deep space projects,” said Congressman Rogers, who is on the House Appropriations Committee. “For over 20 years, MSU has played a key role in aerospace education, preparing students to work with top tech leaders in the industry right from their hometown.”
This funding comes from the Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act, 2026, which was signed into law on January 23, 2026.
Dr. Jay Morgan, President of MSU, expressed pride in the university’s role in space exploration and praised Congressman Rogers for his support. Thanks to this funding, the university can enhance its Space Science Center and provide even more opportunities for its students.
In an exciting development, NASA has chosen MSU to track the Artemis II mission, which will launch in March. This mission marks humanity’s return to the Moon after 50 years. Rogers previously secured $10 million in funding to upgrade MSU’s antenna to support this mission.
Dr. Benjamin Malphrus, Executive Director of the Space Science Center, emphasized the importance of this support. “This funding opens doors for our students to be part of groundbreaking space missions. It allows us to upgrade our facilities to manage multiple space operations for NASA and commercial partners.”
In 2024, MSU students and faculty were recognized for rescuing a public-private lunar mission when communication was lost with a lander named “Odie.” This incident showcased the school’s capabilities and highlighted the importance of their cutting-edge technology.
Overall, Congressman Rogers has helped secure a total of $142 million in funding for various projects in his district, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing community resources. Every county has the opportunity to apply for federal Community Project Funding.
