Texas A&M University has exciting news! Dr. Lingqian (Ivy) Hu will take on the role of dean for the College of Architecture starting July 1, 2025. Currently, she chairs the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Florida. Since joining UF in 2022, she has made a strong impact in research and leadership.
Dr. Hu is a well-respected expert in how transportation and land use affect our daily lives. Her research has focused on making cities more sustainable while supporting our economy and health. She has published over 40 studies in major journals and has led projects that received more than $5.2 million in funding from organizations like the National Science Foundation.
She doesn’t just lead research; she also shapes it. Dr. Hu serves as the co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Planning Education and Research and is an associate editor for Transportation Research Part D. Before her time at UF, she was a professor and chair at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Her academic journey is impressive. Dr. Hu earned her Ph.D. in Policy, Planning, and Development from the University of Southern California. She also has a master’s in planning from there and a bachelor’s from Nanjing University. Notably, she has practical experience as a planner with the Southern California Association of Governments and the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design.
Dr. Hu’s appointment comes at a time when colleges are evolving to meet new challenges and opportunities. The demand for urban planning expertise has surged. According to a recent report from the American Planning Association, the need for urban planners is expected to grow by 11% over the next decade. This aligns perfectly with Dr. Hu’s vision to enhance the program at Texas A&M.
