Exciting News: Elon University School of Communications Unveils Innovative New Major for Fall 2025!

Elon University’s School of Communications has introduced an exciting new major: digital content management. This marks the first new major since 2015, when they added cinema and television arts, communication design, and media analytics.

Why digital content management? According to Vic Costello, a professor and director of the new program, the aim is to address a growing need for students skilled in digital media. “Employers are telling us that they need these skills,” Costello explains.

The new major draws from existing courses within the school. Classes like Brand Identity, Principles of Design, and Data-Driven Strategies for Digital Media will form the backbone of this curriculum. Costello and co-proposer Staci Saltz worked strategically to gather these offerings, aligning them with current job market demands.

Interestingly, enrollment at the School of Communications has dropped 17% since 2021. Dean Kenn Gaither hopes that the new major will help reverse this trend. “We want this major to not only attract more students but also support our existing programs,” he said.

Elon senior Lauren Boulia, a member of the Dean’s Student Advisory Board, sees this major as an opportunity for students to gain relevant skills that align with today’s job market. Boulia reflected on her past internship experiences, noting, “Many applicants didn’t fit the job description because they lacked the right skills. This major could bridge that gap.”

Boulia also points out that the overlap between majors within the School of Communications could actually enrich the overall enrollment, allowing students to easily double major. Gaither echoed this idea, expressing hopes that students from other disciplines will find value in digital content management.

Beyond the classroom, there’s a growing trend surrounding digital content management in the job market. A recent survey indicated that 75% of businesses plan to invest more in their digital strategies over the next year. This signals a clear direction for aspiring professionals.

In summary, the addition of the digital content management major not only responds to student needs but also aligns with industry demands. By equipping students with relevant skills, the School of Communications aims to enhance the educational experience while boosting overall enrollment.
